  • Please review this. There are missing words in the paragraphs: e.g. in Slippery Elm what part is used? And the large heading should be Forefathers, not Firefathers. Those are 2 of the errors.

    • Loretta !
Is That All You could Find is So Called Errors, in this Very Good Information Provided by Lisa Tanner ? Are You Just This Type of Negative Personality Always ?

      • The information is priceless but needs to be proof read before publication…perhaps by the publisher if not the author.

  • Yarrow, cayenne, and peppermint can stop a virus in its tracks. Make a tea, drink it, then wrap up in sweatsuits and blankets. It won’t be comfortable, but increases in body temperature can kill viruses.

Do not use yarrow on anyone with liver disease. Peppermint is not safe for children under two. Cayenne tends to be an “adults only” spice anyway.

  • Medications for young children are to be used with great care and sound knowledge.
So much of the medicinal and edible plants are found in the coastal states. Far less is known of the plains of the deserts. Of today’s list feverfew and yarrow have been seen where I’d be able to get them. Feverfew grows along my grape arbor and yarrow is fairley common 100 miles east of me.
Natives here were early on hunger, gatherers, and farmers. It took everything together to survive and stay in deserts. Or they had to practice seasonal nomadic living. In mountains and deserts following game and plants.
There were tribes doing both in many areas. Here Apaches and Navajos followed wild crops and hunted across vast areas while later stropping to grow large fields of corn obtained from the pueblos tribes. The pueblos tribes lived in groups building stone and Adobe homes and villages. They gardened and were hunter gathers. They made waterproof pottery for cooking and storage vessels. They grew varieties of corn, beans, and squash plus often cultivating wild plants or watering some wild plants to insure survival through the hot summers. Villages and gardeners were placed in the path of summer monsoon rains. Wild fruits were often planted near the garden areas. Summers in the high mountain desert can still reach 100 and -10 to -20 is not unusual on a winter night.. Once we hit -46 on a record breaking night that killed a lot of fruit trees.
Mostly medicinal plants that are commonly taught are not here. It didn’t mean those things were unknown historically because there were trade routes from coast to coast. It means if I want to use them today I have to buy them, so if commerce breakers down they are unavailable. I tend to grow or cultivate things for family use here. To live they have to tollerate a ph of close to 7 and our shorter growing season.

Many medicinal plants grow in the desert and plains. I grew up on them.. If you share your state or providence or what zone you live in I can share some plant names and uses with you.
      Lisa Tanner,
Please change the past tense wording of our People to present tense in your post. It says written by Lisa Tanner so I am assuming you can change this. We are not People of the past and we have not stopped in utilizing medicinal plants so past tense wording is dishonoring. It would be much appreciated. I am thinking this is an oversight and is a common mistake as most are taught in school that we were all conquered, killed, that we are gone. We are not. I appreciate that you are sharing to help others, thank you. As you are writting Indigenous Peoples knowledge here it is respectful to honor us by acknowledging us now. A higher honor would be to quote us or invite that we share on your blog instead of speaking for us. This would be more appropriate and it would be appreciated. Thank you.

      • Grace,
I live in Michigan and would greatly appreciate any help you could give as to plants i could grow here that would be beneficial.

      • YES. Lisa Tanner, _please_ honor and remedy this.

  • Well written, thank you. I really appreciate your sharing this with us, and yes…someday this information and more like it is very likely to be necessary, beyond just usefil and interesting.

One of my favorites is in full fruit right now where I am in SC, elderberries. I make a large batch of syrup every summer and freeze it in juice bottles along with extra berries just frozen as they are. This is one of the most potent antivirals I have ever used. I am thinking about drying some berries as well this year.

One other thing I have had good sucess with is basil. One fresh basil leaf healed a cold sore on my lip in kess than trn minutes a few years ago, and I haven’t had any recurring herpes since. I have made lip balm with it in the past and am due to make another batch soon.

Again thank you for the good info!

  • I’m truly a novice at this sort of medicine. I understand tinctures from a previous article, tea, and poultice. A couple of terms I don’t understand is making an “infusion.” The other is “decoction.” Perhaps these terms may be common knowledge, but I must have been out picking flowers that day! 😉 Also, I noticed there’s nothing said about the dosage if it’s being ingested. Can you recommend a good resource for more in depth learning of all facets relative to using nature’s medicines? Thanks so much!

  • It’s a shame Golden Seal Root was left out. It is an herbal antibiotic, that I buy in capsule form. I have been using it for over 40 years with great success. The only thing I know, it is made with buttercups flowers from the Ranunculales famil
    y.

  • Nice content.
